Unlike CFCs, N\u2082O emissions are not controlled by the Protocol, making it the subject of intense scientific and policy discussion.<\/p>\n<h2>Stratospheric Chemistry<\/h2>\n<p>In the stratosphere, N\u2082O reacts with excited atomic oxygen (O*) to produce nitric oxide (NO), which then participates in catalytic ozone destruction cycles. The relevant reactions include:<\/p>\n<pre>N\u2082O + O* \u2192 2NO\nNO + O\u2083 \u2192 NO\u2082 + O\u2082\nNO\u2082 + O \u2192 NO + O\u2082<\/pre>\n<div class=\"chem-data-box\">\n<div class=\"label\">N\u2082O ODP (relative to CFC-11)<\/div>\n<div class=\"value\">~0.017<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Implications<\/h2>\n<p>Although N\u2082O&#8217;s ozone depletion potential per molecule is much lower than CFCs, its large emission volume makes it a significant contributor.
