With a global warming potential 273 times that of CO₂ over a 100-year horizon and an atmospheric lifetime of approximately 109 years, N₂O emitted today will still be warming the planet well into the next century.

Historical Concentration Trends

Pre-industrial atmospheric N₂O concentrations hovered around 270 ppb. By 2023, that figure had reached 336 ppb — an increase of 24% that mirrors the acceleration of industrial agriculture. The annual growth rate has been accelerating, rising from 0.6 ppb/year in the 1980s to over 1.0 ppb/year in recent years.

Sources and Sinks

Agriculture dominates anthropogenic N₂O emissions at approximately 56% of the total. The application of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers drives this figure: soil microbes convert excess nitrate and ammonium to N₂O through nitrification and denitrification processes. Manure management, biomass burning, and wastewater treatment collectively account for most of the remainder. Natural sources include ocean emissions and soil processes in tropical forests.

Stratospheric Impacts

Beyond its direct warming effect, N₂O is now the single largest anthropogenic source of stratospheric ozone-depleting emissions. When N₂O reaches the stratosphere, UV radiation and excited oxygen atoms convert it to nitric oxide (NO), which catalytically destroys ozone molecules in a cycle that can eliminate thousands of ozone molecules per NO molecule before termination.

Of all the long-lived greenhouse gases tracked by climate scientists, nitrous oxide presents a uniquely challenging combination of potency and persistence.
