Piloted by Mike Melvill and powered by a hybrid rocket motor burning N₂O as its oxidizer, this achievement marked the beginning of the commercial spaceflight era and demonstrated that nitrous oxide had a role to play at the frontier of human exploration.

The SpaceDev Hybrid Motor

The SpaceShipOne hybrid rocket motor, developed by SpaceDev, burned hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) rubber as its solid fuel and liquid nitrous oxide as its oxidizer. The motor produced approximately 74 kN of thrust for a duration of 83 seconds. The choice of N₂O was deliberate: its self-pressurizing nature eliminated complex feed systems, while its relative inertness compared to liquid oxygen dramatically simplified ground handling and fill operations.

The Ansari X Prize

SpaceShipOne’s achievement clinched the $10 million Ansari X Prize, which required reaching 100 km altitude twice within two weeks with a craft capable of carrying three persons. The prize structure was explicitly designed to catalyze commercial approaches, and the N₂O hybrid propulsion approach played directly into this ethos of safety and operational simplicity.

Lasting Legacy

Virgin Galactic licensed the SpaceShipOne technology to develop SpaceShipTwo, which continues to use an N₂O/HTPB hybrid motor for suborbital tourist flights. More broadly, SpaceShipOne demonstrated that hybrid N₂O propulsion systems could achieve spaceflight, opening a design pathway that multiple commercial ventures continue to explore for small satellite launchers and suborbital research vehicles.

On June 21, 2004, SpaceShipOne climbed to an altitude of 100.12 kilometers above the Mojave Desert, becoming the first privately funded, manned spacecraft to reach…

[13

post-40","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-aerospace
["GET
