Its Global Warming Potential (GWP) over a 100-year timeframe is 273, meaning one tonne of N\u2082O has the same warming effect as 273 tonnes of CO\u2082 over a century.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Such High GWP?<\/h2>\n<p>N\u2082O absorbs infrared radiation in atmospheric windows where CO\u2082 is less effective. It has strong absorption bands at 7.8 \u03bcm and 17 \u03bcm wavelengths. Additionally, N\u2082O has an atmospheric lifetime of approximately 109 years \u2014 far longer than methane (12 years), meaning each molecule contributes to warming for over a century.<\/p>\n<div class=\"chem-data-box\">\n<div class=\"label\">GWP-100 (IPCC AR6)<\/div>\n<div class=\"value\">273 CO\u2082-equivalent<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Radiative Forcing<\/h2>\n<p>Current N\u2082O concentrations (336 ppb in 2024) contribute approximately 0.21 W\/m\u00b2 of radiative forcing \u2014 about 6% of total anthropogenic forcing.
