Nitrous oxide has emerged as a leading oxidizer for hybrid rocket motors, combining the storage simplicity of a liquid oxidizer with relatively benign handling compared to liquid oxygen. Its self-pressurizing nature eliminates the need for pressurant gas systems, simplifying vehicle architecture.
Performance Characteristics
N₂O/HTPB (hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene) hybrid systems achieve specific impulse (Isp) values of 250–270 seconds at optimal mixture ratios. The oxidizer-to-fuel (O/F) ratio for peak Isp is approximately 7:1 by mass. While lower than liquid oxygen systems (Isp ~310–340s), the operational simplicity often justifies the performance trade-off.
Notable Applications
SpaceShipOne and SpaceShipTwo (Virgin Galactic) use N₂O/HTPB hybrid motors designed by Sierra Nevada Corporation. The Gilmour Space Technologies Eris rocket uses N₂O-based hybrid propulsion. Small-scale N₂O hybrid motors are widely used in amateur and research rocketry due to ease of handling.
