Industrial storage of nitrous oxide presents unique engineering challenges due to its properties as a liquefied gas under pressure and its ability to support combustion. Safe storage requires specialized vessel design, materials selection, and operational protocols.
Phase Behavior and Storage Conditions
N₂O is stored as a liquid at ambient temperature under its own vapor pressure. At 20°C, the vapor pressure is approximately 50.5 bar; at 30°C it rises to approximately 66 bar. Storage vessels are typically designed for maximum allowable working pressures (MAWP) of 90–100 bar.
Material Compatibility
Carbon steel and stainless steel (304, 316L) are acceptable for N₂O service. Copper alloys, aluminum, and certain elastomers may react with high-purity N₂O under elevated pressures. Particular caution is required with lubricants and organic materials in contact with liquid N₂O, as these may cause spontaneous ignition.
