N₂O Production: Industrial Methods and Processes

Industrial production of nitrous oxide (N₂O) relies primarily on two main processes: thermal decomposition of ammonium nitrate and the catalytic oxidation of ammonia. The ammonium nitrate route accounts for approximately 85% of global industrial N₂O output.

Ammonium Nitrate Decomposition

The primary industrial route involves controlled thermal decomposition of ammonium nitrate (NH₄NO₃) at temperatures between 230–250°C:

NH₄NO₃ → N₂O + 2H₂O

This exothermic reaction must be carefully controlled to prevent runaway decomposition. Modern facilities use continuous-flow reactors with precise temperature management systems.

Process Parameters

Key operational parameters include reactor temperature (±2°C control), residence time (typically 2–4 seconds), and downstream purification to achieve pharmaceutical/food-grade purity exceeding 99.5% N₂O.

Reaction Enthalpy
ΔH = −36.0 kJ/mol

The resulting gas stream contains N₂O along with water vapor, nitrogen oxides, and trace impurities requiring multi-stage purification including scrubbing, drying, and cryogenic separation.
